Oculoplastics

The eyelids can be malpositioned for a variety of reasons.  It could be present at birth or due to aging, trauma, burn or tumors.  A malpositioned eyelid not only looks unappealing, but more importantly, it can cause severe irritation, burning tearing and possibly compromise vision.

Entropion

Entropion is the medical term for the inward turning of the lower eyelid.  This causes the eyelid and lashes to constantly rub against the front part of the eye and the mucous membrane that protects the eye.  These are important reasons for having the condition repaired before permanent damage occurs to the eyes.  There are a number of surgical techniques for successfully managing entropion.  The usual procedure involves tightening of the eyelid and its attachments to restore some of its elasticity and to reposition it normally.

Ectropion

Ectropion is the term for an abnormal lower eyelid that turns outward.  When the lower eyelid turns outward an no longer touches the eye, it cannot properly spread the tear film across the eye which leads to poor drainage of tears. The exposed inner lining of the eyelid becomes dry and inflamed.  As a result the eye may become damaged.
This condition usually involves one or both lower eyelids and rarely affects the upper lids.  To prevent dryness of the cornea because the tear film does not properly lubricate the eye, artificial tears and ointments may be used to keep the cornea moistened.  Depending on the cause, the surgical correction varies.
